This book focuses on an obscure case of infanticide (18th century) in order to pursue a heated debate on the essence of life and the nature of the soul, where theological, moral and scientific principles come into conflict. On 5 December 1709 in Bologna Lucia Cremonini is accused of a terrible crime: the murder of her newborn son. This tragic episode, exhumed from the depths of time, is placed at the centre of an enthralling study by one of the leading scholars of modern history and the history of religious beliefs. During the course of a dramatic trial the crime is debated by representatives of religious, philosophical, moral, and scientific culture, all characteristic of the formative period of the modern world and all seeking a convincing answer to fundamental questions.

Trotz auffälliger systematischer Gemeinsamkeiten unterblieb bisher ein Vergleich zwischen Hegels Philosophie des subjektiven Geistes aus der Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften und der spekulativen Seelenlehre der spätantiken Neuplatoniker Plotin und Proklos. Dies stellt umso mehr ein Desiderat dar, als die herausragende Stellung des Neuplatonismus für Hegels Denken von der jüngeren Forschung nachdrücklich erwiesen wurde. Dieses Buch füllt diese Lücke in der Hegelforschung unter Berücksichtigung von Hegels eigener Interpretation des Neuplatonismus in den philosophiegeschichtlichen Vorlesungen. Dabei zeigt sich die besondere Bedeutung, die gerade die Seelenlehre des Plotin für Hegel besitzt: Diesem attestiert er eine in weiten Teilen dem eigenen Systemdenken adäquate Position im Hinblick auf die enge Verbindung von Seele und Geist. Und tatsächlich entspricht Plotins Vorstellung vom Verharren der Seele im Geist in weiten Teilen Hegels Lehre vom subjektiven Geist, der erst im Aufstieg zum Absoluten zu sich selbst findet. Hegel erweist sich damit auch in Bezug auf die Seelenlehre als wegweisender Interpret des Neuplatonismus.

Augustinus ist im Werk Eckharts allgegenwärtig. Doch auf welche Weise führt Eckhart den Kirchenvater weiter? Meinen beide das Gleiche, wenn sie vom menschlichen Geist als Bild Gottes sprechen? In der Frage nach dem menschlichen Geist als Bild Gottes fließen viele Bereiche der Theologie und Philosophie zusammen – von der Schöpfungslehre und der Anthropologie über Fragen der Gnade und des freien Willens bis hin zur Tri-ni-tätslehre. Diese Arbeit beleuchtet die verschiedenen Themenfelder bei Augustin und Eckhart und ihre Bedeutung für die Sichtweise des menschlichen Geistes. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die oft kreative Weiterführung der Gedanken Augustins bei Eckhart.
